Tools: xG and PPDA calculators
Two open calculators: estimate shot quality from distance and angle, and work out PPDA from passes allowed and defensive actions. Teaching models, not.
Both tools run in your browser. They are teaching models built from the published definitions — not the proprietary models used by data providers, so read the caveat under each one.
Shot quality from distance and angle
The heuristic: quality falls as distance grows and as the angle between the shot and the goal narrows. Face-on, close-range shots come out high; tight angles and long ranges come out low.
PPDA from passes and defensive actions
PPDA counts how many passes the opponent completes for every defensive action your team makes — lower means more aggressive pressing.
PPDA is a ratio, not a verdict: a low number can mean relentless pressing or a team that defends high and rarely has to tackle. Read it with territory and possession.
Caveats worth repeating: real xG models add shot type, defensive pressure, goalkeeper position and the pass before the shot. A geometric estimate is a starting point for reading a match, never a replacement for the model behind a published figure.
